EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

EMDR is an evidence-based, integrative psychotherapy that is most commonly used to support people who have experienced complex trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and associated symptoms.

EMDR treatment uses clinical protocols that include bi-lateral stimulation through eye movement, sounds or tapping on the body. It can be used with both adults and children.

The model on which EMDR is based, the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP), suggests that when a person experiences significant trauma, the brain can store and encode traumatic or disturbing adverse life experiences in ways that get in the way of daily life. EMDR therapy aims to enable the resumption of normal information processing and integration in the brain and body.

EMDR addresses issues involving the past, present and future by targeting past experiences, current triggers, and future potential challenges.

Goals of EMDR:

  1. Enabling clients to work towards a decrease in distress from disturbing memories
  2. Promoting an improved view of the self
  3. Supporting clients to experience relief from bodily disturbance and somatic symptoms
  4. Working alongside clients to help them navigate and reduce present and future triggers
