Sensory Integration (SI)

Sensory integration, or sensory processing, is an automatic neurological process that occurs throughout our life. It develops naturally during ordinary childhood activities, however, for some people, it does not develop as efficiently as it could and can affect activities of daily living, academic achievement, behaviour or social participation.

SI therapy includes structured exposure to sensory input, movement therapy, balance treatments, and carefully designed and customised physical activities and accommodations (e.g., changes to the environment or routine).  An SI Practitioner will work with the client and their family, school, or other allied health professionals to create a recommended suite of activities and accommodations (that can be carried out both in therapy sessions and at home or school) to help give that individual the sensory input they need. For many people, small adjustments to their environment or how they are allowed to move at school or home can make a huge difference in how they manage their day-to-day life.

Goals of Sensory Integration

Improve Sensory Processing:
Help the brain interpret and respond appropriately to sensory input.
Reduce over- or under-responsiveness to stimuli (e.g., noise, textures, movement).
Enhance Self-Regulation:
Support better emotional regulation and attention control.
Reduce sensory-related meltdowns or anxiety in overwhelming environments.
Develop Motor Skills:
Improve coordination, balance, and body awareness (proprioception).
Enhance both fine motor skills (e.g., writing, buttoning) and gross motor skills (e.g., jumping, running).
Promote Adaptive Responses:
Encourage purposeful and appropriate responses to sensory experiences.
Increase the ability to participate in typical daily activities and routines.
Improve Social Participation and Communication:
Help individuals engage more effectively in social situations.
Foster confidence in interacting with peers and participating in group settings.
Support Independence in Daily Activities:
Make tasks like dressing, eating, bathing, and school participation easier and more manageable.
Foster autonomy in various environments (home, school, community).
